New York Employers to Report Independent Contractors as New Hires

The New York Taxation and Finance Department posted a notice on its website reminding employers to report certain independent contractors as new hires.

Effective Jan. 1, 2022, employers must report independent contractors as new hires if the contract is worth more than $2,500, under a 2021 law.

An employer must report the independent contractor’s name, address, Social Security number, and contract date in addition to the employer’s name, address, and Federal Employer Identification Number. Employers can provide this information online through New York’s New Hire Online Reporting Center website.
