The New Zealand government announced that it plans to make Matariki a public holiday starting in 2022.
The day Matariki would be celebrated will vary because it is based on the Maori New Year. Specifically, Matariki would fall on the closest Friday to the Tangaroa lunar calendar period of the correct lunar calendar month. A list of the exact days Matariki will be celebrated from 2022 to 2052 can be found in the report from the Matariki Advisory Committee. Matariki would fall next year on June 24, 2022, the government said.
