Changes to North Carolina’s wage-payment requirements were enacted under a bill (S.B. 208) that was signed into law on July 8 by Gov. Roy Cooper (D) and effective immediately.
Employers must provide newly hired employees with written notice of their wage rate, their pay day, and the payment place, under the bill. Previously, the notice did not need to be written.
Written notice of any decrease in wages must be provided at least one pay period before the decrease takes effect, under the bill. Previously, only 24 hours advance notice was needed before wages could be decreased.
