Rhode Island Ends Subminimum Wages for Disabled Workers

June 29, 2022, 8:39 PM UTC

The Rhode Island state labor and training director may no longer approve subminimum wages for mentally and physically disabled workers, under a bill Gov. Daniel McKee (D) signed June 15.

H.B. 7511, which went into effect upon signing, repealed a section of state law that granted the state labor and training director the power to issue special licenses permitting subminimum wages for mentally and physically disabled workers.

The state labor and training director may still issue special licenses permitting subminimum wages for learners and apprentices for the first 90 days of employment under a separate state law.
