South Africa Finalizes Amount of First National Minimum Wage

South Africa is to have a national minimum wage in effect for the first time, as the National Minimum Wage Act was signed by President Cyril Ramaphosa, the South African Government News Agency said Nov. 26 in a news release.

The national minimum wage is to be 20 rand (U.S. $1.44) per hour and 3,500 rand (U.S. $251.83) per month, the government said. Numerous industry sectors in the country, such as civil engineering and taxi driving, already have minimum wages in effect, although some of these are lower than the new national minimum wage.
