Two California cities, Hayward and Santa Clara, announced minimum wage increases Sept. 29 that will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2023.
Hayward’s hourly minimum wage for large businesses will rise to $16.34 from $15.56, the city said on its minimum wage webpage. The hourly minimum wage for small businesses will rise to $15 from $14.52, but small businesses will be subject to the statewide $15.50 hourly minimum wage instead of the local rate because it is higher. Large businesses are businesses with at least 26 employees, and small businesses are businesses with fewer than 26 employees.
