Virginia is setting wage garnishment limits for liens issued by localities, under a bill effective July 1.
Tax collectors for counties, cities, or towns may place a treasurer’s lien on employers that pay or will pay wages or salary to individuals with unpaid local tax debt for more than 30 days. SB 597 generally limits wage garnishments on treasurer’s liens to the lesser of 25% of an individual’s disposable earnings per pay period or the amount by which the weekly disposable earnings exceed 40 times the state minimum wage.
