Republicans Take Wait-and-See Approach to IRS Workforce Cuts
GOP lawmakers are largely holding fire amid the Trump administration’s plan to slash the IRS workforce by half—even as many of the states with the highest numbers of agency workers are Republican strongholds.
Data from the Office of Personnel Management shows the highest numbers of IRS employees worked in Texas, followed by Utah, California, Georgia, and Missouri, as of September 2024. In 2024, President Donald Trump carried all those states, except California.
