California Ban on City Tax-Sharing Deals with Retailers Fails

A bill to ban a handful of California cities from cutting deals with some of the world’s largest retailers to share tax revenue from online sales failed to pass the state Senate Thursday.

The bill (S.B. 1494), from Senate Revenue and Taxation committee Chair Sen. Steve Glazer (D) failed 17-11 in the face of opposition from business and local government groups, including the California Taxpayers Association, California Chamber of Commerce, California Retailers Association, and League of California Cities.
