California’s high court said Wednesday it will consider a request from Gov. Gavin Newsom and Democratic lawmakers to keep a measure off the November 2024 statewide ballot that would make it harder to enact state and local taxes.
The California Supreme Court stopped short of granting the governor’s emergency petition and request for a stay to remove the ballot measure, but indicated it has preliminarily accepted his reasoning. Newsom and other Democratic leaders argue the business-backed measure improperly goes beyond the power of voters because it tries to revise—rather than amend—the state constitution.
