Negotiators have blown past their latest, critical deadline for agreement on a major part of the OECD-led global tax deal, forcing focus on the very real possibility of failure.

What comes next if the ambitious OECD project to tax digital companies dies depends on whether countries—some of which are itching to bring in more revenue—decide to act on their own or stay committed to global talks, but at a different forum.
