Embracing International Challenges—Aditya Chandel of AZB & Partners

What do you love most about your job?

My area of practice is cross-border M&A tax and international tax. The thing I love most is this constant conversation between domestic tax systems of two or more jurisdictions mediated by rules of international tax—primarily the double tax avoidance treaties. This interplay of tax systems requires one to collaborate specifically in a cross-border scenario with other tax professionals from across the world, which in my view is always an exciting experience.

The international tax system has been a product of tremendous effort and collaboration that has served well for more than 100 years and continues to be a work in progress, making it one of the most dynamic areas of practice. The ongoing work around implementation of BEPS, MLI, general anti-avoidance rules and Pillars One and Two makes it appealing even from a future prospects perspective.

The other aspect of being a tax professional that I love is the challenge, which primarily arises from ever-changing business models and, more recently, digitalization and mobility fueled by Covid–19. Those challenges also throw up opportunities for tax professionals like me to think ahead and not just be reactive.
