The European Commission published Friday default values that can be used for calculating carbon emissions embedded in imported goods during a transitional period ending in 2025.
For the first three quarters, starting Oct. 1, 2023, importers covered by the so-called Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, or CBAM, can report emissions based on the default values without quantitative limit, according to a press release from the commission Friday.
For the remaining six quarters, they can still report emissions based on default values but only for complex goods and with a limit of 20% of the total embedded emissions.
