IRS revenue officers no longer will make unannounced visits to taxpayers about unpaid taxes and unfiled tax returns, ending a decadeslong practice, the agency announced Monday.
The change is being made to ease taxpayer confusion, given the growth in scammers impersonating IRS employees, and improve safety measures for taxpayers and IRS employees, the agency said.
“We are changing a common image that people have of IRS collection employees going door to door to collect taxes,” IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel said on a call with reporters.
