Resolving My First Tax Audit—James Karanja of ALN Kenya

Oct. 26, 2022, 8:45 AM UTC

When was the first moment that made you feel confident about your work as a tax pro?

I first encountered international tax during my undergraduate study in the faculty of law; I found it extremely fascinating, and I did not hesitate to choose it as my career specialty. The excitement from resolving my first tax audit gave me a lot of confidence, energy, and a renewed zeal to solve complex matters with excellence.

I cherish being in the tax profession, where there is no day without an exciting new challenge to deal with. In my 22-year career, I have helped solve complex tax problems around the world, having participated in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development’s BEPS project. I’ve also managed a successful tax capacity-building project, Tax Inspectors Without Borders, supporting tax administrations in emerging economies to build transfer pricing audit capacity.
