I am going to give blood this week. That may sound like a routine statement—but it hasn’t been for some time. An explanation is probably in order.
As soon as I was old enough to donate blood as a teenager, I did. There are a host of reasons, but mostly, it was because there had been some significant sicknesses in my family, including my grandmother’s bout with breast and lung cancers. It seemed like an easy way to help others in similar situations, and my parents could not donate due to medical conditions—my mom is a cancer survivor.
