EU Close to Adopting Legal Protection for Whistle-Blowers

The EU Council of Ministers reached agreement on establishing whistle-blower protection rules for employees who disclose company tax evasion and other illegal activities.

Under the Jan. 25 agreement, private companies with 50 employees or more and 10 million euro ($11.4 million) annual turnover would be required to set up an internal reporting system.

Employees would receive legal protection if they first used the internal system, but reports to an external authority or to the media could also qualify for protection under certain circumstances.
