EU’s State-Aid Probes Should Stoke Tax Reform, Official Says

The European Commission’s tax probes aim to incentivize governments to reform how they tax companies, according to the EU’s top state aid official.

• Carles Esteva Mosso, EU’s deputy director-general for state aid, made the comments in a speech in Trier, Germany.
• “The goal is not to simply continue adopting decisions one after the other, the goal is also to create incentives for member states to modify their taxation in some of these areas and we have seen already some success in this area,” he said.
• The EU is currently probing tax rulings for Nike and Ikea; it has previously declared as illegal some tax rulings for Apple Inc. and Amazon.com Inc.
