Charter Urges N.Y. Appeals Court to Toss $7.85 Million Tax Bill

Related companies filing combined tax returns can claim New York’s lower corporation franchise tax rate for “qualified emerging technology companies,” even if certain members don’t qualify, Charter Communications Inc. told a state appeals court.

The phone and internet provider, formerly known as Time Warner Cable, is appealing a 2024 state tax tribunal ruling that it owes an additional $5.99 million in tax and $1.86 million in interest for tax years 2012 to 2014 because some members weren’t located in New York. If Charter prevails, its total tax bill for those years would be under $200,000.
