Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam wants recreational marijuana legal by this summer.
Northam (D) recently signed two bills (S.B. 1406/H.B. 2312) that legalize and tax adult-use cannabis in Virginia by 2024 and forgive marijuana-related crimes by 2025. He announced Wednesday—just a day after legalization legislation passed in New York—several budget amendments that would allow possession by July 1 of this year and speed up the timeline to expunge marijuana-related crimes. Both provisions previously threatened to derail the entire legalization effort.
