Virginia Legislature Rejects Governor’s Gas Tax Holiday

June 18, 2022, 12:28 AM UTC

Virginians won’t get the gas tax holiday Gov. Glenn Youngkin pressed for, after the state Senate on Friday rejected the proposal he made in a budget amendment sent to lawmakers earlier in the week.

Senators voted against it 21-18 after the House had approved it earlier 55-41, in a one-day special session.

  • The Republican governor’s plan would have suspended the state’s 26-cent gas tax and 27-cent diesel tax from July through September.
  • It also would have limited annual increases in the taxes to 2%.
