Bessent Pressured on Trump Settlement From House Lawmakers (1)

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent faced more questions Thursday from House Ways and Means lawmakers on President Donald Trump’s settlement with his own government that included a controversial $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund.

Trying to head off a deluge of inquiries from his colleagues, Ways and Means Chair Jason Smith (R-Mo.) asked Bessent to address the settlement at the beginning of the hearing.

Bessent again said he wouldn’t comment, echoing his Wednesday testimony before the Senate Finance Committee. He noted, however, that the settlement agreement calls for the US to issue an apology to the plaintiffs.
