IRS Free E-File Tool to Open Fully in 12 States on March 12

The IRS plans to open its pilot of an agency-run free e-filing tool to all eligible users on March 12 across the 12 pilot states once testing of the platform is complete, an agency official said Friday.

Ahead of that wider opening, starting March 4, the Direct File program will be available for new users to start their returns 24 hours a day, when a message at the top of directfile.irs.gov indicates that Direct File is open, the IRS official said.

This marks an expansion of the program that so far has been open to new users only in short windows of time, but the program is still being tested and will remain limited in this time period. Only so many new users can join in a day, and the program may close to new users if a day’s allotted spaces are exceeded, the official said.

More spaces are added each day, and existing users who have already started returns can continue to use the platform even on days where it closes to new users.
