The IRS will randomly, at unannounced times, allow taxpayers to participate in its controversial free agency-run e-filing pilot program in the coming days.
Direct File will be available to taxpayers in the 12 pilot states, but only during these short windows of time, an IRS official said Wednesday. The windows may change as the testing progresses.
This is the next phase of testing after the IRS tested the tool internally with government employees.
