IRS Suspends Automated Taxpayer Notices as it Deals With Backlog

The IRS is putting on hold the automated collection notices, unfiled tax return notices, and balance due notices it sends to taxpayers, it said Wednesday, acknowledging the need to work through a backlog of millions of unprocessed tax returns.

The agency’s announcement, in IR-2022-31, is an attempt to address persistent requests for relief from tax professionals. It’s also a way for the agency to try to deal with a backlog of unprocessed returns, a product of the pandemic, before tax filing season gets into full swing.
