Treasury Extends Tax Deadline for Alcohol, Tobacco Businesses

March 31, 2020, 9:41 PM UTC

The Treasury Department is giving alcohol, tobacco, firearms, and ammunition businesses more time to file and pay excise taxes to help them cope with the new coronavirus pandemic.

The extension applies to any tax payments or operational reports due on or after March 1 through July 1, the department said in a news release Tuesday. The government won’t charge interest or penalties on payments made within 90 days of the original due date, according to the release.

  • Treasury’s Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau will re-evaluate the terms of the relief as circumstances warrant, the department said.
  • The announcement is the latest of several tax extensions that have been provided to individuals and businesses affected by the virus.
