U.S. Narrows Cryptocurrency Records Request After Court Pushback

The U.S. government has altered its proposed summons for records from cryptocurrency exchange Kraken after a California court questioned whether the initial proposal was narrowly tailored to information pertaining to potential tax law violations.

The government is requesting permission from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California to serve a John Doe summons on Payward Ventures Inc., which does business under the name Kraken. Such summonses, allowed with court permission under tax code Section 7609, seek records from third parties about unnamed taxpayers.
