IRS Watchdog Nominee Pledges to Probe Any Abusive IRS Audits

President Joe Biden’s pick to head the IRS watchdog promised to investigate any situations where the agency conducts politically motivated audits.

David Johnson, nominated July 23 to be Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, fielded questions Thursday from Senate Finance Committee members on IRS audit targets, artificial intelligence, and his priorities if confirmed to the position.

Both Finance Chairman Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and ranking member Mike Crapo (R- Idaho) pressed Johnson to commit that TIGTA would remain independent and not tolerate situations where the IRS targets audits based on political affiliations.
