Encouraging Broad and Open Dialogue—James Karanja of ALN Kenya

Oct. 28, 2022, 8:45 AM UTC

What kinds of changes have you seen in diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, and how are you engaging with those efforts?

Having worked in tax administration, and now as a member of the tax team at ALN Kenya, I have a better understanding of how negative biases toward either side can adversely affect the outcomes of a tax dispute. As such, I constantly encourage broad and open dialogue to resolve matters with positive results.

Having interacted with numerous tax professionals across the globe, it strikes me how much gender parity has been attained in the profession—both in leadership positions and the rank and file of most tax departments. In tax conferences that I organize and get involved in, I always ensure that panels are gender-balanced, a best practice adopted by organizations I work with.
