Temporary Workers Create Tax Nexus in Most States, Survey Shows

Just a few employees working from home in another state is enough to put companies on the hook for taxes in about 75% of states, according to a Bloomberg Tax & Accounting survey.

The survey, released late Thursday, comes less than a month after New Hampshire filed a challenge at the U.S. Supreme Court to Massachusetts’ tax on its teleworkers, reviving a call from business interests for a uniform threshold for taxing employees scattered across the states. New Jersey lawmakers, at the same time, are pursuing action against New York taxes on people now telecommuting.
